As unconventional as it may seem, old wire ropes are being used to help preserve the Temuka and Opihi rivers in New Zealand. Each year, thousands of miles of old wire rope are being used to help anchor trees and to help reduce erosion along the riverbeds. All studies have found that the wholesale steel cable being collected is being extremely useful and they hope to continue this project moving forward.
The steel cable and wire rope being used is proving to be crucial in assisting with effective river flow management. Environment Cantebury’s Temuka works depot has been essential in collecting the used wire rope and cables that now line the riverbeds. To date, the depot has collected thousands of miles of wire rope and steel cable which is key to preserving the river moving ahead. The depot has even expressed the need for shorter steel cables and wire ropes which may otherwise go to waste. The depot states that most of the chains, steel cable and wire rope that is being donated comes from local forestry and fishing companies. However, the depot is always looking for new wholesale wire rope suppliers to work with in order to accommodate new donations. Depot supervisor Paul Eddy was quoted as saying, “We are keen to be able to recycle this wire for use on river protection works such as groynes, anchoring trees and layering.
