Industrial Crane Amp Wire Rope Used To Fix Vermillion Dam

The Vermillion River is located just southwest of Chicago, Illinois. However, the river at the dam has been closed and off limit to the public since July 2, 2009. The decision to close the dam was that of the dam’s owner, Buzzi Unicem, who closed it after several incidents had occurred near the dam.

In 2009, three people were hurt on the river and one person was killed. All those hurt were rafting on the river near the dam. In 2008, before the dam was closed, two people died after suffering hypothermia from a raft that capsized underneath the dam.

Now, Buzzi Unicem is working with industrial crane operators and using wire ropes in conjunction with 2-ton concrete blocks in order to stop the heavy river flow through the dam. Strong industrial cables (or wire ropes) are needed to support the weight of the 2-ton slabs, but the workers are hoping to put a stop to the River’s rushing waters by distributing the blocks along the dam.

The industrial crane, with the assistance of workers in boats and in the water, is using steel cables in order to lower concrete blocks into deep holes in the river. Until now, the deep holes in the river have caused strong, rotating currents that can easily pull boats and people underwater. After the crane has lowered the 2-ton blocks into place, workers expect to significantly improve conditions near the river’s dam.

Advancements In Wire Rope Amp Steel Cable Inspections Make Extreme Recreations Safer

The popularity of wire rope and steel cable zip lines being used for recreational activities continues to grow, not only across the United States, but all over the world. New zip line tours in exotic places like Mexico and Brazil seem to be opening everyday and there are no signs that it will be slowing down any time soon.

However, with the sudden and steady increase of zip line popularity, more and more operators are becoming concerned with the safety and long-term integrity the steel cables and wire ropes in general. Advanced Wire Rope, out of Texas, is just one of the most recent organizations to come up with a new way to monitor steel cable and keep zip lines safe.

Now, instead of relying on charts and visual inspections, zip line operators can use new and sophisticated technology to detect flaws within the steel cable strands. There is no doubt that when it comes to purchasing wholesale wire rope and wholesale steel cables, one must pay close attention to the manufacturer/wholesaler you are purchasing from. Once that steel cable and wire rope is purchased, it is just as important to maintain the hardware’s integrity and safety.

A representative of Advanced Wire Rope, Michael Robinson, may have said it best recently when was quoted as stating, “Finally, a perfect way to check the physical integrity and the likely life span of your zip lines. Don’t guess anymore, give Advanced Wire Rope Inspections access to you zip lines and save money because you’ll know exactly when to change them. We have perfected the nondestructive testing technique that will test zip lines in place and will give operators peace of mind by knowing the exact condition of their cables.”

Michael Robinson went on to say, “In the past, zip line operators have had to change out the cables early because they didn’t know the interior conditions. Now, lightning strikes, interior breaks, cable stretching, diameter losses, etc. are all at our fingertips, Advanced Wire Rope Inspections will also CERTIFY the condition of your lines and offer another layer of liability to your operation.”

Used Wire Rope Helps Protect Rivers In New Zealand

As unconventional as it may seem, old wire ropes are being used to help preserve the Temuka and Opihi rivers in New Zealand. Each year, thousands of miles of old wire rope are being used to help anchor trees and to help reduce erosion along the riverbeds. All studies have found that the wholesale steel cable being collected is being extremely useful and they hope to continue this project moving forward.

The steel cable and wire rope being used is proving to be crucial in assisting with effective river flow management. Environment Cantebury’s Temuka works depot has been essential in collecting the used wire rope and cables that now line the riverbeds. To date, the depot has collected thousands of miles of wire rope and steel cable which is key to preserving the river moving ahead.

The depot has even expressed the need for shorter steel cables and wire ropes which may otherwise go to waste. The depot states that most of the chains, steel cable and wire rope that is being donated comes from local forestry and fishing companies. However, the depot is always looking for new wholesale wire rope suppliers to work with in order to accommodate new donations.

Depot supervisor Paul Eddy was quoted as saying, “We are keen to be able to recycle this wire for use on river protection works such as groynes, anchoring trees and layering. We can even make use of shorter lengths that might otherwise go to waste.” He went on to say, “They use them in just about every aspect of live tree protection and erosion control.”
